The term “best practices” is bandied about frequently. But what really is meant by
In any real estate management business, the odds are that others somewhere are
doing the same thing you are doing and, in fact, doing it better than you. If you
want to be the best, you need to find those people, tap into their knowledge, learn
their secrets and apply them to your own business and your own way of doing
things to improve your own operations.
This is the idea behind best practices: Identifying programs and activities that
have been used repeatedly by others—indeed, tested by others—and have been
shown to deliver superior results. A best practice approach to process improvement
is less about making major overhauls and more about identifying ways to make
incremental but meaningful changes that will consistently improve the way a business is operated.
A critical characteristic of best practices is that they can be shared by others and
replicated by others to deliver similar results. The underlying concept of a best practice approach assumes that successful approaches will be recorded, that knowledge
will be shared and that others will be able to learn from the others’ experiences.
